Understanding Targeted Species

You can expect to catch many different species when offshore fishing in Portland, including halibut, lingcod, Albacore tuna, and more. In order to catch these species, you’ll need to understand their behavior and habitat, along with their bait preferences.

Migration Patterns: Research seasonal movements of targeted species like tuna, salmon, halibut, and lingcod. Understand their preferred depths, feeding habits, and the influence of oceanic currents.

Habitat Preferences: Learn about specific structures or underwater features favored by different species. This knowledge helps in identifying potential fishing grounds.

Forage Identification: Identify prevalent baitfish and forage in offshore waters. Mimicking these baitfish with lures or presenting live bait can attract desired species.

Understanding Predatory Behavior: Study how offshore species hunt and react to bait. This understanding aids in selecting the most effective fishing techniques and presentations.

Gear and Tackle Selection

Don’t forget the items you’ll need to pack, especially your offshore fishing gear! While fishing charters will usually include this in their package, you may want to bring your own.

Customized Rods: Choose rods suited to various offshore fishing styles—trolling, jigging, or bottom fishing. Opt for rod actions and lengths that match the targeted species.

Robust Reels: Select reels with sturdy construction and sufficient line capacity. Consider different reel sizes for different fishing techniques.

Rig Variety: Carry a diverse range of rigs, from spreader bars and bait rigs for trolling to heavy-duty bottom rigs for rockfish or lingcod. Prepare different rigs tailored to the intended fishing depths.

Lure Selection: Pack an assortment of lures in various colors, shapes, and sizes. Include diving plugs, swimbaits, metal jigs, and soft plastics to cover different fishing scenarios.

Live Bait Consideration: Research local availability and regulations for live bait options. Live bait can often outperform artificial lures in enticing offshore species.

Essential Tools: Bring necessary tools like pliers, hook removers, de-hooking tools, and a gaff for handling and securing landed fish.

Techniques for Offshore Success

There are certain techniques that can set you up for success when offshore fishing in Portland, depending on the species you’re targeting. Here are a few tips you can follow:

Speed and Depth Control When Trolling: Master techniques for controlling trolling speeds and depths using downriggers or diving planers. Adjust trolling speeds to match the preferred pace of target species.

Lure Presentation When Trolling: Experiment with different trolling lures, colors, and patterns to mimic the movement of baitfish effectively.

Jigging Methods: Practice vertical jigging techniques with heavy jigs or metal lures. Vary jigging motions to entice strikes from species dwelling near the ocean floor.

Bottom Fishing Approaches: Employ techniques like drift fishing or anchoring over specific structures or drop-offs to target bottom-dwelling species like halibut or rockfish.

Safety Precautions and Regulations

Always prioritize your safety when in the deep sea and be aware of the fishing regulations Portland has set. Here are a few things to take into consideration:

Weather Awareness: Stay vigilant regarding changing weather patterns and their impact on offshore conditions. Be prepared to alter fishing spots or techniques accordingly.

Trial and Error: Be open to experimentation. Adjust lure types, colors, or depths, and vary techniques to find what works best in specific offshore environments.

Emergency Preparedness: Familiarize yourself with safety procedures and the location of safety equipment onboard. Follow the captain’s instructions regarding safety protocols and emergency situations.

Personal Safety Gear: Ensure everyone on the charter wears appropriate safety gear, including life jackets and weather-appropriate clothing.

Fishing License and Limits: Acquire the necessary fishing license and adhere to size and bag limits for targeted species. Understand and respect local regulations regarding protected or prohibited species.

Fish to Catch in Astoria Oregon and When to Target Them!

One of the best places to go fishing is in Astoria, Oregon. It’s home to some of the best fishing opportunities in the state! It’s one of the many reasons why anglers head to the area, especially for a deep sea adventure where they stand a chance at catching monster fish.

With so many fish to catch in Astoria Oregon, you may be left wondering what to expect when planning your trip. Read on as we share the different species you can target in Astoria and the best times of year you can catch them.

Fish to Catch in Astoria Oregon

Astoria is a coastal city popular for the fishing opportunities it presents. The popular areas to fish in are in the Columbia River or Pacific Ocean, though you can also head to the rivers and take on inshore fishing trips in the area, too.

Here are some of the popular species you can catch and the best times to target them:

Steelhead

Astoria offers some of the best opportunities when catching steelhead trout. This is a species worth targeting because of its size, delicious meat, and the fight they give when it’s time to reel one in. They are big fish, and you can expect a lot of action, making them a great target species for seasoned anglers looking for adventure.

This species of trout lives in rivers and then spawns in the ocean, and they are most popularly found in the Columbia River and its tributaries. We recommend heading to Astoria to catch them from fall and winter during their spawning season, though they are available to catch all year long. As for the exact time of day, they are more active in the morning.

You can use various fishing techniques to catch steelhead trout, such as still fishing, bank fishing fly fishing, or fishing from drift boats.

Halibut

You can almost always find halibut offshore, a popular species targeted for its size and flavor. They are considered the largest flatfish in the ocean and can grow up to nine feet long. Plus, everyone loves their white meat, which can be cooked in so many ways!

You can find halibut near offshore rocky and sand reefs. Note that you’ll need to go out to the Pacific for halibut if you plan to catch some from Astoria.

As for when to catch this species, their peak season is from May to August, then their fishing season is closed at other times of the year. While the time of day doesn’t affect halibut as much as it does other fish species, they are generally most active during high tide and late morning.

Silver and Chinook Salmon

Astoria is known for having some of the best salmon runs. In fact, the silver and chinook salmon are two of the most targeted species in Astoria, and for many great reasons. These fish can weigh between 10-30 pounds and have such delicious meat, you’ll be glad to bring home a few to cook and enjoy.

Columbia River would have many large and healthy salmon runs, and if you time your trip right, you have a higher chance of catching a lot of them.

Salmon will run to the rivers from August to October, then head to the ocean during other times. You can catch them any time of the day, but they are most active in the morning.

While you can catch salmon in the ocean, the most productive fishing comes from the river, especially in the Columbia River.

Lingcod

Like halibut, you can find lingcod on offshore reefs. They will feed on the bottom, living in extremely deep waters. It’s a fun species if you want to go bottom fishing!

Because of that, they are best targeted during the winter, making lingcod one of the only species you can target during this cold season. But even then, this fish is active and available all year long. We recommend targeting them during the late morning.

If you’re targeting lingcod, expect to come up with some halibut, too. These are two species you’ll enjoy catching, especially since their meats taste great!

Sturgeon

Expect world-class sturgeon fishing in Astoria, with many anglers targeting them when in season.

Sturgeon is one of the most popular and fascinating species one can catch because of its history and size! They are considered prehistoric fish that have been lurking around the waters for ages. They can even live to be over a hundred years old!

Moreover, they are gigantic species. If you plan on going offshore fishing, you’ll be surprised by how big they can get. Some sturgeon can measure up to ten feet long and weigh a whopping 800 to 1,000 pounds. You’ll need to make sure that you get help if you do reel one in.

Do note that this species is only in season from May to July when in Astoria. This is because their population must be preserved.

You can find sturgeon in the Columbia River, where they are most active during the night. Unfortunately, the rivers are closed at this time, so we recommend targeting them in the early morning or evening. It’s also possible to have higher chances of getting a bite during foggy or cloudy afternoons. This is because sturgeon have sensitive eyes, so the less light outside, the better.

Wrapping It Up

Astoria Oregon Fishing Regulations

Astoria Oregon is a special place when it comes to fishing. It has a unique location on the banks of the Columbia River, making Astoria an excellent launch location. Because of that, you can expect a myriad of fishing opportunities all year long.

From Astoria, you can head over for fishing action in the Columbia River, its Estuary, and even the Pacific Ocean. That’s three separate fisheries from one launch location, and that isn’t something you see just anywhere. But before you begin fishing, you must be aware of the Astoria Oregon fishing regulations to avoid losing your license or facing any penalties.

Read on as we share important Astoria Oregon fishing regulations and seasons to learn when you should catch your target species and any restrictions to know about.

Astoria Fishing Regulations: What to Know

It’s common for both the ODFW and WDFW to open spots like Buoy 10 on August 1 and close it near Labor Day. However, the closure date heavily depends on the projected run, quota setting, and actual total catch.

When timing your trip, remember that the best fishing won’t always begin on the opening date. It will pick up in a week or so, depending on the weather.

Washington and Oregon have an agreement called shared jurisdiction. Meaning, Washington anglers can fish in a boat in Oregon waters and vice versa. That said, you can’t bank fish on shores you aren’t licensed for. The one important rule is that anglers must follow the rules of the state in which they are fishing!

The Astoria Oregon fishing regulations are a very broad topic, but you can find specific rules related to your trip on ODFW and WDFW’s official websites. The Columbia River alone has different rules for every section, so it can get quite confusing and difficult to keep updated.

This is why it’s best to join a fishing charter or hire a local fishing guide if you are new to the area. They are constantly updated with the fishing seasons and regulations across Astoria and will lead the way to the best fishing spots while following the bag limits and restrictions.

Fishing Seasons

The exact dates for fishing seasons will vary on the year and species, but these were the fishing seasons this 2022, along with their bag limits:

Summer and Fall Ocean Salmon Fishing: June 25 to September 30. There is a two-salmon bag limit and only one of them can be a chinook salmon.

Buoy 10 King Salmon Fishing: August 1 to September 7. About 1,000,000 chinooks will pass right in front of Astoria so you have a higher chance of catching salmon at this time.

Fall Coho Salmon Fishing (Columbia River): Late August to mid-October. There is a 3-fish limit after September 7.

Bottom Fishing: Open all year long. Most species are also open to catch except for Cabezon, which can only be retained from July 1 to December 31.

Catch-and-release Sturgeon fishing: All year long but you’ll get the best chances from mid-May to early August.

Keeper Sturgeon fishing: This is a very limited opportunity and is only open from May 11 to June 4 from Wednesdays to Saturdays.

Dungeness Crab: September to December. There is a 12-crab catch limit.

Spring Chinook Fishing: May 12 to June 22

Summer Chinook Fishing: June 16 to 22

These fishing seasons still vary as it depends on where you will be fishing in the Columbia River! There are exceptions to the zone regulations, so stay updated by learning about the different zones here.

Fishing Gear

The gear you are allowed to use will depend on where in Astoria you plan on fishing. In Buoy 10, there aren’t any specific fishing gear regulations. You must not use illegal fishing equipment or techniques to catch fish, though. For instance, you cannot fish from a floating device or use a floating device to set lines in Bonneville Dam.

Moreover, there aren’t any written rules for the kinds of boats to use in the Columbia River. However, for mainstem Columbia River salmon and steelhead fishery upstream, it is not allowed to fish from vessels less than 30 feet long from February 15 to June 15.

It’s important to note that outgoing tides may make boating dangerous, so you must be wary in case you plan to navigate the waters yourself. Make sure you carry life jackets and wear them the entire trip.

About Fishing Licenses

If you plan on fishing on your own, then you must possess the appropriate fishing license. You can use either Oregon or Washington fishing licenses on the Columbia River. The day licenses for either state are about $25 each.

Fortunately, these licenses are easy to obtain and can be purchased online or in-store. However, if you plan to join a fishing charter, chances are you won’t need to avail yourself of a license as this is already included with the package. Your captain possesses a fishing license covering all joiners.

Wrapping It Up

Astoria isn’t only filled with history and unique sights, it’s also the ultimate fishing destination! The next time you’re going on a fishing trip in this area, make sure you are fully aware of the Astoria Oregon fishing regulations.

It’s best recommended to hire a local fishing guide or join a charter as the captain and crew are well-knowledgeable of such information. If you’d like to do so, contact us now! We offer great charter services so all you need to think of is reeling in the big one.

So, what do you do? Besides joining a fishing charter or hiring a private fishing guide, we share more tips and tricks to catching salmon in Astoria Oregon. Keep on reading!

Tips and Tricks to Catching Salmon in Astoria Oregon

It can be quite challenging catching salmon in Astoria Oregon. But you can end the day with a higher likelihood of bringing home a catch with these tips and tricks:

What Bait to Use?

Your bait can make or break your fishing trip, which is why you need the best and most effective one. For salmon, an important detail is the freshness of your bait.

You might have already come across the term, “match the hatch.” This refers to using natural bait salmon forages for their entire life. When you’re in Astoria waters, salmon will search for familiar baitfish they usually feed on.

What we recommend using are fresh anchovies and fresh herring, which is what most of their diet consists of. You can purchase these in the nearest local bait shop. The fresher, the better!

Use Sharp Hooks

Salmon skin is tough and hardy, so it requires a sharp point to pierce through it. Factory hooks would come as semi-sharp, so it’s best to sharpen those hooks before and during your trip.

Not to worry, as sharpening your hooks is a fairly simple skill anyone can quickly learn. You simply need a file and stroke the leading edge of your hook, making it sharper. Do this throughout the day to maintain the sharp edge, as this small detail can make your day out in the waters a better one.

Do note that you’ll get a mix of freshwater and saltwater in Astoria, so the exposure to such water and other elements can dull the hook of any caliber. That’s why you must check your hook occasionally to see if it requires some sharpening. If you aren’t confident with your sharpening skills, you can ask your fishing guide or charter crew to help you out, if you joined one.

Don’t Chase Bites

Just like with catching many other fish species, you must be patient. In this world-class fishery, there will be a ton of salmon you can catch, and you might have gotten a ton of bite reports from fellow anglers.

While bite reports are awesome, they can either be productive or counterproductive. A lot of anglers tend to fall victim to chasing such bite reports and when you do, you aren’t actually fishing. If you spend more time driving around to get to bites, that equals less time fishing and harvesting salmon. Most times, you’re better off sticking to a spot and waiting for a bite. Sooner or later, your target species will snap!

We recommend making a game plan before you leave the dock based on the weather, tides, recent fishing history, and other vital factors. When you follow your plan, you have more chances of catching salmon rather than following what everyone else around you says.

What are the Peak Times?

What time should you catch salmon? They bite well come the first hour of daylight. Afterward, the best bites would usually be an hour before and after the tide change. It’s crucial to prepare yourself and focus on getting a bite during those peak times.

Anglers know that these windows of opportunity are very small, so it’s crucial to catch fish during that part of the tide. With the bite at its peak, take advantage and focus more on catching fish rather than snapping photos or slacking off!

Be Confident!

And finally, it’s all about confidence, which is a bit tricky as an angler. Most times, it’s attitude-behavior and sometimes, it’s determined by experience level.

Regardless, a vital key to success is to be confident and trust your decisions. It’s easy to get thrown off while fishing, especially if your first few attempts to do something right end up failing. You might be second-guessing your decisions at that point, feeling disheartened.

Well, now’s not the time. If you lose your confidence and perspective, your judgment will change and you might end up forcing decisions and making adjustments that would detriment your chances of catching salmon in Astoria Oregon. Like anything we do in life, we can’t make wise decisions with a confused and scrambled mind, which is why you must be calm and collected in the waters

When you feel less confident, remind yourself why you decided to fish at a specific spot or why you decided to use a certain technique. This can help you stay confident, encouraging you to make smarter decisions that will lead to a catch.

If you are still a beginner, it’s best to seek help from a charter captain or fishing guide, too!

Wrapping It Up

Catching salmon in Astoria Oregon takes patience, skills, and a bit of luck coming your way. With these tips and tricks, you’re more prepared to head to the waters and catch yourself some salmon you can bring home and brag about during dinner.

If you’re still planning your fishing trip, make sure to consider joining a charter or hiring a guide. They will definitely amp up the chances of you catching more salmon. Contact us now and we can help you get an amazing experience around the Oregon area!

Astoria Dungeness Crab Fishing Charter

Astoria Dungeness Crab Charters

As you have probably guessed, Dungeness Crab is the name of the game in Astoria. The Dungeness Crab is the most commonly caught type of crab along the Pacific Coast. These crabs are normally 7-8 inches across the carapace but the whoppers can reach up to 10 inches across. They are well known for their tasty, sweet white meat.

Getting help from a crabbing charter is by far the best way to bring home a cooler full of these delicious crustaceans. Here are a few reasons a charter is worth its weight in gold.

They know when to crab
Different season are going to produce different quality crabs. If you catch crab in the early fall months, they tend to be more filled out and can contain up to 30 percent more meat. While you can fish the estuaries (bays, beaches, jetties, tide pools, and piers) year round, you can’t catch Dungeness crabs in the ocean from October 16th to November 30th.

They know the honey holes
When you fish with an experienced guide like us, you are out on the water with someone that has been fishing these waters for most of their lives. This means they will know all the best spots for setting the pots.

They have all the gear
It can get a bit pricy getting into the crabbing game. The biggest investment that will help you catch a lot more crab is a boat! While it’s not an absolute necessity, it will make a huge difference. In addition to the boat, they will have all of the crab pots, buoys, a pot hoist to get them out of the water, and the crab gauge to tell which are keepers. Perhaps the most important piece of gear is the GPS on the boat. This keeps the guides secret spots in its memory.

They know the best bait
Depending on the season, different baits are going to work better. Your guide is going to know just what the crabs have a hankering for! One of the Dungeness crabs favorite food is leftover salmon, so crabbing with a guide that’s also a salmon guide is ideal because they can keep the carcasses of the salmon in the salmon pots.

They know the rules and regulations
The waters of Oregon are highly regulated by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Dungeness Crab regulation are strict to male crabs with a carapace of at least 5 3/4 inches across. A tool called a crab gauge is used to measure across the carapace of the crab. In addition, you are only allowed to keep the male crabs. They can be difficult to identify but with a little training it can be done with ease. On the belly, the males have a skinny triangular abdominal flap. In contrast, the females have a shorter, rounder abdominal flap.
