Where to Go Crabbing in Tillamook Bay

Garibaldi Marina

Garibaldi Marina is a popular launching point for crabbing enthusiasts in Tillamook Bay. With ample parking, boat rentals, and easy access to the bay, it’s an ideal starting location for both novice and experienced crabbers. Head out into the bay and drop your pots in areas with sandy bottoms or around submerged structures where Dungeness crabs are known to congregate.

Tillamook Boat Launch

Located near the mouth of Tillamook Bay, the Tillamook Boat Launch provides convenient access to prime crabbing grounds. Launch your boat or kayak and navigate the bay’s channels and estuaries to find productive crabbing spots. Be sure to check the tide charts and target outgoing tides, when crabs are more active and feeding along the bay’s bottom.

Bayocean Spit

The Bayocean Spit, a sandy peninsula extending into Tillamook Bay, offers excellent opportunities for shore-based crabbing. Set up your crab pots along the shoreline or wade into shallow waters to deploy your gear. During peak crabbing seasons, such as late summer and early fall, the Bayocean Spit can be bustling with activity as anglers try their luck from the shore.

Memaloose Point

Memaloose Point, located on the eastern side of Tillamook Bay, is another productive crabbing location accessible by boat or kayak. Cruise along the bay’s shoreline and look for rocky outcrops, eelgrass beds, and shallow bays where crabs are likely to forage for food. Anchor your vessel and drop your crab pots in strategic locations to increase your chances of a successful haul.

Nehalem Bay State Park

While technically outside of Tillamook Bay, Nehalem Bay State Park is worth mentioning for its excellent crabbing opportunities just a short drive north of Tillamook. Launch your boat or kayak from the park’s boat ramp and explore the expansive Nehalem Bay, targeting shallow flats, channels, and tidal creeks where Dungeness crabs thrive.

Kilchis Point Reserve

For a unique crabbing experience, consider visiting Kilchis Point Reserve, located along the Kilchis River estuary near Tillamook Bay. This protected area offers opportunities for both land-based and kayak crabbing. Explore the reserve’s trails and shoreline, and set crab pots in strategic locations where freshwater meets saltwater, creating an ideal habitat for Dungeness crabs.

Netarts Bay

Just south of Tillamook Bay lies Netarts Bay, another prime crabbing destination worth exploring. Launch your boat or kayak from Netarts Bay’s public boat ramp and venture into the bay’s expansive waters. Target shallow flats, submerged oyster beds, and channels where crabs are abundant. Netarts Bay is known for its large and flavorful Dungeness crabs, making it a favorite among local crabbers.

Tips When Crabbing in Tillamook Bay

– Use quality crab pots or rings baited with fresh chicken, fish heads, or squid to attract crabs.
– Check local regulations and obtain the necessary permits before crabbing in Tillamook Bay.
– Monitor your crab pots regularly and avoid leaving them unattended for extended periods to prevent theft or damage.
– Handle crabs carefully and comply with size and catch limits to ensure sustainable harvesting practices.
– Enjoy your freshly caught Dungeness crabs by cooking them on-site or taking them home to prepare delicious seafood dishes.

With an offshore fishing charter in Portland, these necessary tasks will be taken cared for by the charter captain. Just make sure you follow these tips so you can rest assured you selected the right fishing charter company for your needs.

Research Charter Companies: Look for reputable charters with a history of successful offshore trips. Check online reviews, testimonials, and social media platforms for customer feedback.

Captain’s Expertise: Inquire about the captain’s experience in navigating offshore waters around Portland. Knowledgeable captains increase the likelihood of locating productive fishing spots.

Boat Inspection: Prioritize well-maintained boats equipped with GPS, radar, and fish-finding technology. Ensure the vessel is spacious and comfortable for an extended offshore trip.

Fishing Gear: Confirm that the charter provides quality fishing equipment, including rods, reels, and tackle suited for offshore species.

Safety Protocols: Inquire about the charter’s safety protocols and emergency preparedness. Verify the availability and functionality of safety equipment such as life jackets, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits onboard.

Crew Competency: Assess the crew’s expertise in handling emergencies and providing assistance to anglers. Experienced crews enhance the overall safety and enjoyment of the trip.

Understanding Targeted Species

You can expect to catch many different species when offshore fishing in Portland, including halibut, lingcod, Albacore tuna, and more. In order to catch these species, you’ll need to understand their behavior and habitat, along with their bait preferences.

Migration Patterns: Research seasonal movements of targeted species like tuna, salmon, halibut, and lingcod. Understand their preferred depths, feeding habits, and the influence of oceanic currents.

Habitat Preferences: Learn about specific structures or underwater features favored by different species. This knowledge helps in identifying potential fishing grounds.

Forage Identification: Identify prevalent baitfish and forage in offshore waters. Mimicking these baitfish with lures or presenting live bait can attract desired species.

Understanding Predatory Behavior: Study how offshore species hunt and react to bait. This understanding aids in selecting the most effective fishing techniques and presentations.

Gear and Tackle Selection

Don’t forget the items you’ll need to pack, especially your offshore fishing gear! While fishing charters will usually include this in their package, you may want to bring your own.

Customized Rods: Choose rods suited to various offshore fishing styles—trolling, jigging, or bottom fishing. Opt for rod actions and lengths that match the targeted species.

Robust Reels: Select reels with sturdy construction and sufficient line capacity. Consider different reel sizes for different fishing techniques.

Rig Variety: Carry a diverse range of rigs, from spreader bars and bait rigs for trolling to heavy-duty bottom rigs for rockfish or lingcod. Prepare different rigs tailored to the intended fishing depths.

Lure Selection: Pack an assortment of lures in various colors, shapes, and sizes. Include diving plugs, swimbaits, metal jigs, and soft plastics to cover different fishing scenarios.

Live Bait Consideration: Research local availability and regulations for live bait options. Live bait can often outperform artificial lures in enticing offshore species.

Essential Tools: Bring necessary tools like pliers, hook removers, de-hooking tools, and a gaff for handling and securing landed fish.

Techniques for Offshore Success

There are certain techniques that can set you up for success when offshore fishing in Portland, depending on the species you’re targeting. Here are a few tips you can follow:

Speed and Depth Control When Trolling: Master techniques for controlling trolling speeds and depths using downriggers or diving planers. Adjust trolling speeds to match the preferred pace of target species.

Lure Presentation When Trolling: Experiment with different trolling lures, colors, and patterns to mimic the movement of baitfish effectively.

Jigging Methods: Practice vertical jigging techniques with heavy jigs or metal lures. Vary jigging motions to entice strikes from species dwelling near the ocean floor.

Bottom Fishing Approaches: Employ techniques like drift fishing or anchoring over specific structures or drop-offs to target bottom-dwelling species like halibut or rockfish.

Safety Precautions and Regulations

Always prioritize your safety when in the deep sea and be aware of the fishing regulations Portland has set. Here are a few things to take into consideration:

Weather Awareness: Stay vigilant regarding changing weather patterns and their impact on offshore conditions. Be prepared to alter fishing spots or techniques accordingly.

Trial and Error: Be open to experimentation. Adjust lure types, colors, or depths, and vary techniques to find what works best in specific offshore environments.

Emergency Preparedness: Familiarize yourself with safety procedures and the location of safety equipment onboard. Follow the captain’s instructions regarding safety protocols and emergency situations.

Personal Safety Gear: Ensure everyone on the charter wears appropriate safety gear, including life jackets and weather-appropriate clothing.

Fishing License and Limits: Acquire the necessary fishing license and adhere to size and bag limits for targeted species. Understand and respect local regulations regarding protected or prohibited species.

When in the Portland area, one of the most popular activities to do is fishing, and for many great reasons. With so many spectacular fishing spots in the state, there will always be something for every type of angler. Whether you’re fishing inshore, nearshore, or in the deep waters, you can enjoy reeling in small and big catches alike.

But this might leave you wondering – What are the fish to catch in Tillamook Bay anyway? Read on for our guide so you know what to expect.

Fish to Catch in the Tillamook Bay

If you aren’t familiar with Tillamook Bay yet, this is a 13-square-mile body of water that’s known for its excellent Chinook salmon runs. However, it’s also known for the many other fishing opportunities, which we’ll tackle below.

There are multiple bank access points with various well-maintained boat launches, making the area suitable for any angler all year long. Here are some of the facilities to consider:

Memaloose Boat Ramp – This is great for angling the upper bay, with some bank angling available.

Garibaldi Boat Basin – This is great for those who want to catch crabs as the marina has a boat or crab pot rentals. It’s a great boat launch when fishing the Ghost Hole, lower bay, and the ocean.

Barview County Park and North Jetty Access – This provides both beat and jetty access.

Tillamook River Tidewater Access – This is an ADA-accessible fishing platform on Netart’s Hwy (Hwy 131)

There are other launch sites you can look into from the Tillamook Bay Water Trail Guidebook.

So, you know where to launch from the area. What about the kind of fish to catch in Tillamook Bay? Here they are!

Chinook Salmon

You can catch Chinook salmon in the bay from April to July, but we recommend fishing for this species from May to June. Do note that bank fishing areas are limited to a few pull-outs along the Bay Ocean Rd on the upper bay and the ADA-accessible boat launch.

Come fall, Chinook salmon will start arriving in late August, with October being the best month. You can find bank access along the Tillamook River on Fraser Rd, where you can pay a fee for the Trask River tidewater.

As for bank fishing techniques and gear, you can use bobber, bait, and spinners in Upper Tillamook Bay.

Other than Chinook salmon, you can also catch other species such as the coho, sockeye, and chum salmon. With the thriving population of salmon, you’re going to enjoy catching these fish throughout the year. We highly recommend using popular techniques like trolling, spinning, or even fly fishing.

Steelhead Trout

Steelhead trout is one of the most popular species in Tillamook Bay for locals and visitors alike. They are also known as cutthroat trout, known as a unique species with delicious meat you can grill. Thanks to their meat and the excitement it brings when reeling one in, they are one of the top sport fish species in North America.

They are fun to catch in Tillamook Bay since they are available most of the year, particularly in early spring or from July to October. If you are targeting steelhead trout in Tillamook Bay, we recommend fly fishing or a deep-water fishing technique. Both baits and artificial lures are effective in catching this tasty fish.

White Sturgeon

Sturgeon is one of the oldest living bony fish on this planet, existing for over 200 million years. They are known as dinosaur fish and aquatic giants, with some of them growing anywhere between 7-12 feet, and weighing up to a whopping 800 pounds on average.

While anglers all over the world try to find sturgeon to reel in, take note that these are strictly catch-and-release fish to preserve their population.

Come winter and early spring, you can catch sturgeon from boats in the many shallow channels from Tillamook Bay. From late spring to summer, you can fish from Fraser Rf or the ADA-accessible platform from the lower Tillamook River. As for the baits to use, we recommend using mud or sand shrimp.

Dungeness Crabs

Dungeness crabs are one of the most popular seafood in the USA thanks to their delicious meat. You can catch your own crabs at Tillamook Bay or join fishing charters to take you out to the bay!

What’s great about crabbing in Tillamook Bay is because of the area’s favorable breeding and reproducing grounds for Dungeness crabs. They also have ideal feeding grounds, so you’re assured a ton of crabs that you can readily catch.

Crabbing is most productive in the lower 1/3 of Tillamook Bay. We suggest crabbing in the old coast guard pier or the public dock from the southern end of the Garibaldi boat basin parking lot when you have no boat.

Use baited rings or crab pots, which you can rent from the Garibaldi Marina. You can also use baited snares and fishing rods to catch crabs from piers and jetties.

Besides fish and crabs, you can also go clamming, with many bay clams ready to be caught year-round. However, the best catches come wintertime, when you can find cockles, gapers, and softshell clams. You can also expect other species like lingcod, cabezon, or rockfish around the bay as well.

Wrapping It Up

Before you head out to Tillamook Bay for a fun day fishing, you must know what species you can target. From salmon to crabs, you’re always assured a fun time in the bay all year long.

Now, the next step is planning your trip according to the target species you want to catch!

Are you planning on heading to Tillamook Bay to enjoy all that fishing action? You’re in for a treat, as most of the bays in the Northwest Zone are home to marine perch, rockfish, crabs, clams, and a lot more seasons all year. What’s great about Tillamook Bay is that it’s the state’s second-largest coastal bay and the largest on the north coast, so you can expect a lot of opportunities to catch the big one!

But of course, there are things you need to prepare for before you head to the pristine waters. One thing to consider is how you must be aware of the Tillamook Bay fishing regulations. If you join a fishing charter, the captain and crew are well-versed on the catch limits and species you can keep. However, it’s still worth knowing these rules to avoid hefty penalties, especially if you plan on going yourself.

So, read on to learn all about the basic Tillamook Bay fishing regulations.

Tillamook Bay Fishing Regulations

Understandably, it can get a bit intimidating to learn all about Tillamook Bay fishing regulations. However, it’s crucial to do so to avoid facing penalties and fines. Here’s a quick guide to help you out based on the species you plan to catch:

Salmon

Salmon is one of the most sought-after species in Tillamook Bay, which comes from May to June. During these times, Chinook will start heading towards Tillamook Bay in rivers and basins, while August will welcome Chinook and coho salmon. Salmon fishing seasons and bag limits vary from year to year so you must stay updated on this, but this 2023, expect the open salmon seasons to be:

In the tidewater upstream to Hwy 101 bridges on Kilchis, Miami, Wilson, and Trask Rivers, and Burton Bridge:

Hatchery spring Chinook salmon inside jetty tips: January 1 to July 31

Fall Chinook salmon: August 1 to December 31, with the North Coast Wild Chinook Aggregate Bag Limit applying

Above Burton Bridge:

Hatchery spring Chinook salmon inside jetty tips: May 22 to July 31

Fall Chinook salmon: August 1 to December 31, with the North Coast Wild Chinook Aggregate Bag Limit applying

If there is a tributary not listed, that means the fishing season is closed. Moreover, angling will be restricted to artificial flies and lures in streams above tidewater from May 22 to August 31.

There may be a rare opportunity to fish for chum salmon in September but do note that these are catch-and-release fish only.

If you plan to catch jack salmon, there is a bag limit of 5 jack salmon per day with 2 daily jack salmon limits in possession.

Steelhead

Also called rainbow trout, these fish are divided into two runs: Winter and summer. Winter steelhead will begin heading towards area rivers and streams in November and December, depending on fall rains. The runs can continue until April.

As for summer steelhead, they will return in early April to June, continuing through late summer to early fall. Sometimes they overlap with winter steelhead!

In Tillamook Bay, the hatchery steelhead season is open all year long. In Tillamook River above Burton Bridge, the fishing seasons are from January 1 to March 31, then again on May 22 to December 31.

Salmon and steelhead have similar bag limits. In the aggregate, you can only catch 2 adult salmon or steelhead per day and 20 per year, except for jack salmon as stated above.

Trout

Trout live in coastal rivers and streams and while small, they are fun to catch! You can find them available to catch from February to May and October. In lakes, they are open to fish all year long, while in streams (including bays and tidewaters), they are open from May 22 to October 31.

Do note that there is a bag limit of 5 trout per day in lakes, with 3 daily limits in possession. As for streams, there is a limit of 2 per day with 3 daily limits in possession. There isn’t a limit on the size or number of brook and brown trout when caught in streams.

As for size limits, the minimum length is eight inches, and you can only keep 1 trout measuring over 20 inches per day.

In streams, rainbow trout measuring over 16 inches are considered steelhead. Salmon under 15 inches are considered trout with the exception of coho salmon, which will always be considered salmon.

Sturgeon

These are huge monster fish that you’ll be proud to catch!

These fish are considered catch-and-release only. If you catch one, they must be released immediately unharmed. If the sturgeon measures more than 54 inches in fork length, it must not be removed totally or in part from the water. Also, you can use only one single-point barbless hook when catching sturgeon.

They are open to catch during salmon, trout, and steelhead seasons, so you can try your luck to target and reel one in for a quick picture.

Other Species

For other species like bluegill, catfish, crappie, walleye, yellow perch, striped bass, and other nongame fish, there is no limit or minimum length. They are also open to catching in lakes all year round. In streams, they are open during trout, steelhead, and salmon seasons.

Wrapping It Up

Tillamook Bay is home to salmon, lingcod, perch, clams, and crabs. You can get the best opportunities to catch them all almost year-round. However, the state does have strict Tillamook Bay fishing regulations to maintain the fish population, so make sure you’re always updated with any rule changes.

Sometimes, the ODFW may impose temporary rules before and after seasons, such as limited harvests for certain seasons. Some species may be banned or impose limited retentions of specific species.

With these rules in mind, prepare for your trip accordingly and make sure you are a responsible, sustainable angler. And if you’re looking for a fishing charter to join with well-versed captains and crews, contact us now to learn more!

There’s nothing like eating fresh Dungeness crabs that were well-cooked by you or any other chef. But maybe one thing does trump it, and that’s the feeling of catching and cooking your own crabs! There are a ton of opportunities to catch Dungeness crabs in Tillamook Bay, and if you’re up for it, you have the chance to go crabbing in the area.

Don’t worry – whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned angler, anyone can go crabbing. You can head to Tillamook Bay with family and friends in hopes of a successful catch. But understandably, it can feel a bit daunting, especially if you have never gone crabbing before.

Read on as we share a guide on catching Dungeness crabs in Tillamook Bay.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" src="https://images.pexels.com/photos/8352016/pexels-photo-8352016.jpeg?auto=compress&cs=tinysrgb&dpr=1&w=500" alt="Free Close-up of abundant fresh Dungeness crabs, highlighting seafood richness and market freshness.
How to Catch Dungeness Crabs in the Tillamook Bay

Tillamook Bay is the northern Oregon coast’s largest bay, a popular fishing destination for Chinook salmon and sturgeon. It also offers awesome crabbing opportunities, with five rivers pouring into it. When we mean big, we mean that Tillamook Bay is massive and has almost 600 acres of waterland!

When to Go Crabbing

Crabbing is legal all year-round on the Oregon coast, being open on beaches, bays, piers, tide pools, and jetties. Note that crabbing for Dungeness crabs in the ocean is closed every October 16 to November 30.

That said, it doesn’t mean that you can go anytime and always expect a successful day. The best times to crab are between September to November, though you can also try crabbing during late summer to early winter. Fall is the best as you get more filled-out crabs with quality meat. Any other time, it would be difficult to find crabs large enough to keep and enjoy.

During the summer, you might find underdeveloped or soft-shelled crabs, which we recommend releasing. These crabs would only have about 10-12% quality meat as opposed to those with hard shells, which have 20%.

Make sure that you plan your crabbing trip wisely. The best time of the day to go crab hunting is during the “slack” water times, either the peak high or low tide. Ready your bait and crab pots, along with well-marked buoys so you can easily identify which pots you own after casting the lines. Also, if it’s been raining a lot, the weather would affect the salinity in common crabbing areas. That’s a good thing as crabs love salty water, so you can have more chances crabbing in the ocean.

Dungeness crabs would usually move between Oregon’s bays and oceans, so the tide is a major factor in their movement. Crabs prefer calmer waters as they have fewer currents to fight during high and low tide, making it easier for foraging.

Rules and Regulations

The state requires a shellfish license, which is different from an angling license. The license is required if you plan to harvest crabs and clams, among other shellfish. You can avail of a license in most fishing or crabbing businesses, and it will be good for a year.

As for the crabbing limits, it would be 12 males at least 5 ¾ inches across the back. You should measure in front of the spines, which are the two spikes on the crab’s sides. As for red rock crabs, the second most popular crab on the Oregon coast, you can catch 24 of any gender or size daily.

Stay updated with the current shellfish regulations and harvest notices before heading out for a day of crabbing. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife would update its website for any announcements or changes in rules and regulations.

Extra Tips

Generally, boat crabbing would reap a higher yield, though dockside crabbing is an easier and more accessible solution. You may harvest crabs directly from docks at the marinas, such as in Netarts Bay Marina, Wheeler Marina, or the Garibaldi Marina.

If you’re confused about where to go crabbing in Tillamook Bay, you can refer to this map for help. It shows where you can go crabbing and clamming, with some areas accessible by bank or walk-in. However, it’s best to reach certain areas by boat, which you can rent to navigate yourself or join a charter for crabbing.

You can find numerous supplies and boating facilities in Garibaldi, and most of the crabbing spots are located on the west of the port near jetties, on either side of the channel.

You can also consider going to “Crab Harbor,” which is located behind Kincheloe Point and across the main channel from Painted Rocks. Both Crab Harbor and the channel are accessible by boat but you can go to the public crabbing dock if you plan to catch crabs in Garibaldi.

Secure your bait to the gear and make sure you’re wearing gloves while doing so to avoid rope burn. You can opt for fresh or slightly rotten meat, which works as excellent bait as crabs have a good sense of smell with pungent foods piquing interest. Tie the end of the line to the dock then toss the crab pot in the water. Wait patiently and you can bring home a few crabs!

Once you catch your crabs, store them in ice packs, a bucket of water, or a cooler with ice. You can either take them home with you or have them cooked by nearby local restaurants.
