Common Techniques Used to Catch Salmon In the Tillamook Bay

There are various ways to catch Salmon in the Bay, with the most common being trolling, fly fishing, bait fishing, and spin fishing. Generally speaking we troll for Coho and King salmon on our fishing charters.

Trolling

In deeper waters, this involves using downriggers and planer boards with a combination of lures and live bait in either Salmon or Steelhead waters. For the most part, we don’t have to use downriggers to catch salmon on our fishing charters. We are lucky enough to be able to use weighted trolling gear to get the lures and bait down to the right depths. Depending on how much line we let out dictates how deep the lure will be fished. This technique is best used for Coho and King Salmon.

Spinning

Spinning is best done in the ocean. However, anglers prefer using it to catch Salmon in Tillamook Bay. As with Trolling, the fish are attracted to lures that imitate their natural food sources. This technique is best used for Chinook, Coho, and Sockeye Salmon.

Bait Fishing

This method is best for salmon species with big mouths, such as the Chinook and Coho. Although anyone can try their hands at bait fishing, it requires lots of practice and skill. Also, using a rod and reel to catch Salmon is best done with cut bait or salmon roe and night crawlers.

Fly Fishing

This technique is similar to Bait fishing as the fish are attracted to a lure that imitates a natural food source. You can use either a fly rod or a spinning rod for fishing. The technique is best used for Chinook and Coho.
